It is surrounded by its lake and is connected to the land through a wider strip of land from embankments, giving the impression of an island.
In its centuries-long history, one and a half millennia of its creation, it has experienced sieges and conquests by Bulgarians, Normans and Turks, but still retains a significant number of Byzantine churches, heirlooms and mansions as evidence of its acne at times, due to the successful marketing and movement of fur important centers in Europe. In particular, the fur industry and its kind of produce grew so that the Kastorians spread to many countries in the world such as Italy, Germany, Spain.
The lake of Kastoria is at an altitude of 620 meters. It is devoid of shape and its waters are surrounded by the city. It is the eighth largest lake in Greece. Its depth ranges from 8-12 meters and the average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. The lake has many inflows of water from the west and an outflow to the Aliakmon River. In an earlier era, the lake completely encircled the boulder that formed an islet.
